Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947 applies to drones in both countries; the German Federal Aviation Office explicitly names Switzerland as an associated state and states that the same operating conditions apply across all of them. The operator is registered in the country of its principal place of business: according to FOCA, our Swiss registration also applies in the EU member states as long as the flight does not require an authorisation, and certificates issued through dLIS are valid there as well.

Our base is in the city of Zürich, less than an hour's drive from the Rhine crossing at Waldshut. The calculator derives the distance from your address; for the towns along the High Rhine — the stretch of the Rhine between Lake Constance and Basel, known in German as the Hochrhein — it comes out between roughly 47 and 93 kilometres. That figure is the basis of our travel charge, not the length of the road route — the actual drive across the border is a few kilometres longer.

Within that band there is neither an expense allowance nor an overnight stay; both only kick in at considerably longer distances in the calculator. Travel is charged at 90 centimes per kilometre for the outward and return trip, with a minimum of 80 francs per visit. Further inland — Freiburg, the High Black Forest, the Lake Constance area — we fly on request; whatever applies there is stated in the quote.

Flying in Germany: rules, zones and credentials

Germany and Switzerland share the same European basis for drones, Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947. The German Federal Aviation Office states that it applies in all EU member states and in the associated states Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Switzerland, and that an unmanned aircraft system may be operated in all of them under the same operating conditions.

It is the operator that is registered, not the aircraft and not the pilot. We are registered as an operator with the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) via the dLIS portal. FOCA states that such a registration also applies in the EU member states as long as the flight does not require an authorisation, and that certificates issued through dLIS are valid in Switzerland and in all EU member states. Our operator number is displayed on both aircraft.

We fly in the open category: up to 120 metres above ground, within visual line of sight, never over assemblies of people, with a remote pilot competency certificate.

Where flying in Germany is restricted is set out in section 21h of the German air traffic regulation (Luftverkehrs-Ordnung). The list covers, among others, airfields and airports including their approach sectors, control zones, nature reserves, residential properties without the owner's consent, federal trunk roads, federal waterways and railway installations, industrial and energy facilities, correctional and military facilities, hospitals, and the sites of police and emergency operations. These areas are mapped in the German air navigation service provider's dipul portal. We check them before every job and, where required, obtain the consent of the responsible authority in advance — which needs lead time.

Section 43 of the German Aviation Act requires the operator to hold liability insurance. Before an assignment in Germany we obtain written confirmation of cover for the site and provide you with the certificate. VAT treatment follows the place of supply; we state it in the quote.

What does a drone flight in South Baden cost?

The same price list applies in Germany as in Switzerland. Solar thermography has fixed amounts per plant size; for surveying and inspection the calculator gives a price range. Travel is added on top; an expense allowance and an overnight stay do not apply on the High Rhine.

At the end of August 2026 we flew a thermographic survey of a ground-mounted photovoltaic plant on the High Rhine: around 4,900 modules, about 2.8 megawatts peak, covered in a single morning. The analysis identified 325 anomalous modules, 126 of them at priority 1. The operator has asked not to be named.
